I'm sure I'm not the only one who eventually runs into this reply.

Yeah. I hate it when people give that response as well. In/to anything, really.

Yeah, I used to get that a lot back in church youth group ... I would be very prepared, back up everything I brought up and have very cogent questions, but eventually SOMEONE would end up saying "just stop asking questions and shut up" - sometimes that bluntly, sometimes more subtly. It's why I eventually stopped going. My mother never did understand why I didn't care to return to that hotbed of hypocrisy and lies ... *shrug*

Censorship of ideas doesn't work. Telling someone to just simply "shut up" may be effective to children, but as adults, we're expected to have slightly better ways of dealing with dissenting views. This is why it's important to listen to the views of other people, not just hang out with people who will agree with you all the time.

Katy writes:

EXACTLY!! Not only that, but encourage debate by bringing up opposing views. I do that often - sometimes even if I don't agree with the view I'm espousing - just to try to force thoughts into the head of the person to whom I'm speaking.

Oh the irony!
